Cowboots, hats and everything fashion! Asiya Siddiqi, a second-generation Pakistani-American pre-med student, blends her passion for Texan culture and faith into her clothing brand, Kin Culture. Siddiqi designs clothing that is perfect to combat hot weather all while remaining modest. I was fortunate to gain personal insight into her journey and how she expresses the different communities she’s a part of.

Siddiqi, an advocate for functional medicine—a holistic approach to healthcare focused on addressing the root causes of a patient’s issues rather than just the symptoms—uses Kin Culture as a way to extend her passion for wellness into the world of fashion. Just as functional medicine confronts underlying health concerns, her fashion brand tackles the challenge of maintaining modesty while allowing individuals to express themselves through fun and unique styles.

I had the opportunity to gain insight into Siddiqi’s view of fashion and how she intertwines her relationship with faith and culture and expresses it through clothes.

Maimuna: You emphasize modesty in your clothing. What does modesty mean to you?

Siddiqi: A lot of people think modesty is something that secludes and covers you. I think at the same time, it's also expressing a part of who you are on the inside. It’s a form of self-confidence. I look in the mirror and value my beauty. My morals and beliefs result from me being modest, which will help me grow into a better person overall. Modesty is a tool to help us grow mentally and spiritually.

Maimuna: How do you find your niche? What led you to intertwine Texas culture with modest clothing?

Siddiqi: Authenticity is really important. I'm Pakistani, but I'm also Texan. I have a multi-faceted identity, and we're all made out of different experiences. In regards to modesty, you could argue that it is hard to be modest in Texas because of how hot it is, like this morning in Austin. I wanted to combine modesty and functionality with my outfits.

Maimuna: Why did you specifically choose Kin as your brand name?

Siddiqi: Islamically, we call men and women our brothers and sisters. I stand for connecting different communities, and Islam plays a huge role in that. Kin represents a familial bond, sisterhood, brotherhood. And I have a close relationship with my siblings as well. So it was just heartfelt.

Maimuna: What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue a similar path early in their career?

Siddiqi: I tell myself that these goals are intimidating. But even if you’re a little sure you should go for it. I saw this quote somewhere and it said the most successful people are people who have the least time in between ideation and creation. So what that means is, if you have an idea, just go for it ASAP

Here are a few ways to style pieces from the collection! What’s the best part about Siddiqi’s collection! The clothes are suitable for hot weather! I recommend playing around with different textures, colors and accessories to create your own unique style.
